The Beauty of Travel

10-Common-Travel-Mistakes-You-Can-AvoidTravel has many benefits to us as humans.  It’s a way to relax, by finding a nice quiet getaway by the beach near a palm tree with a warm ocean breeze washing across our face.  Or a form of adventure for many who travel the world seeking trails off the beaten path, leading to new sights and obstacles.  But above all it is a change in your day to day life that really uplifts and redefines what’s important.  Even something as simple as taking a different path into work, or a different route going home can freshen up your day, and add a little adventure into your life.  Traveling through new terrain will make your brain come alive as you forge your way.

We’re so conditioned to go the same way to work every day, taking the same streets, or subways… but why?  For efficiency?  Possibly, but in many cases you might just find a faster route by trying something new.  I normally take the subway and bus into work, and where I live that’s one of the options I have to get to work.  The other option I have is I can simply walk down the street and grab the street car.  The street car takes me right downtown, in almost the exact same amount of time it takes me jockeying from subway to bus.  So I tried that today… I got a ride half way down towards my destination on Queen Street East, and grabbed a street car the rest of the way.  I took the street car home also, and you know what?  I loved it.  I saw different people, and felt like I was riding on a piece of history itself, after all how many cities have street cars in them?  I enjoyed the weather, which you can’t do inside a subway car… and felt just a little more human.  It was beautiful.

A little change like that can make all the difference, and create a bit of adventure in an otherwise ritualistic and efficient life.  I’ve often thought of applying this out of the box thinking to different forms of travel, especially flying.  I particularly loved the idea at the end of “Up in the Air” with George Clooney, where his character went to a flight board and randomly chooses a destination.  I mean how adventurous is that?  And it’s something we all have access too, and can do at any time.  Have you ever thought of that?  Going up to a flight board, and randomly picking a destination, or whatever interests you at the moment.  Who knows what surprises await you, or who you’ll meet.  All it takes is a little courage, and a credit card and I’m sure you’ll find a place to sleep and eat fairly easily.  In the process you might just discover a part of yourself you never thought existed.  I have thought about it quite a bit… and one day I’ll work up the courage to do it myself and let you know how it goes.
