Deploying Trained Security Guards at ATMs Is a Necessity

By Rakhi Rathaur

Fully trained security guards are useful for thwarting crimes such as theft and robbery at ATM kiosks run by banks. The guards, who have completed a comprehensive training program, will have the knowledge and skills required for performing more effectively while guarding the ATM machines. An unskilled or untrained security personnel may not know what to do when the need arises and he has to nab the thieves or prevent the robbers from breaking into the ATM. Apart from that, a trained sentry will have the licenses and certification required for carrying out his duty.

Automated teller machines are mostly targeted by robbers and assailants. This is a common scene, everywhere. According to a news published in “The Hindu”, police have instructed banks operating in Chennai city to employ trained guards and spruce up security in all ATMs, at the earliest. As per the details disclosed in the news, the inhabitants of the city have complained that trained and capable security personnel are lacking in city ATMs. With the absence of trained security men, these automated teller machines are vulnerable to attacks from thieves and burglars.

Guards, who have received the necessary training for protecting ATMs, play a pivotal role in enhancing security. These security personnel are trained

  • In using guns and other weapons for their own defence
  • On certain rules to be followed inside the ATMs such as permitting the entry of only one or two people at a time
  • On how to act during emergency situations
  • In physical fitness and self-defence skills

But unfortunately, most of the ATMs are not manned by trained security guards. Reporters of “Pune Mirror” have carried out a survey across the city and found out that the ATM kiosks in most of the banks in the city, are guarded by sentries who haven`t received proper training in the use of weapons. This is indeed a shocking finding and it lays bare the defencelessness of ATM machines, which are meant to be well-guarded and protected. Hence, employing trained and armed security men to guard automated teller machines is the need of the hour.

Apart from being completely trained, the security personnel deployed for safeguarding the automated teller machines shouldn`t be aged more than 43-45 yrs. This is because aged or fairly old guards won`t be able to protect these machines against armed attacks. Hence, only young, healthy sentries should be posted for guarding ATM machines.
