How to Fail in Internet Marketing

The advertisement screams so loudly. “How to Get Rich, the Quick and Easy Way!” proclaim the Internet marketing gurus. The potential of getting rich beyond the dreams of avarice drawn drove of newbies in search of the easy path to instant wealth.

1 In the end, the ones who are really rich are the speakers, not the participants. Although they are given the ‘secret formula’, few have what it takes to execute the plan successfully.

Let me share two main reasons why most newbie will fail in Internet Marketing:

#1: Internet Marketing is a Hobby

It is not their number one priority. At the end of a work day, they are too tired to do any hard work. If they have a time, they do some marketing in drips here and there. If they don’t sweat, they won’t die of hunger either because they have a day job to fall back on. There is no hunger, no drive, no obsession.

It was told that Ewen Chia, an ordinary Singaporean, had a humble beginning by working on his Internet marketing business in the evening until the early hours – everyday for five long years – before the God of Wealth smile upon him and grants him the desires of his heart. When asked about the secrets to his success, he said that one of the keys is obsession. “Internet marketing is not a hobby; it’s a serious business,” he said.

#2: A Grasshopper Mindset

There is an adage that “the grass is always green on the other side.” We are sold on the promise that making money is so easy when we saw the Internet marketing gurus demonstrating live before the audience how the ‘payment received’ emails stream into their email automatically.

So they are conditioned to expect that making money through Internet marketing should be quick and easy. When they do not see the result quickly enough, it’s time to pop the next magic pill. Like grasshoppers, they hop from one course to another and in the end, they are masters of none.

The truth is that it takes time to master a trade. It is said that it takes 10,000 hours to gain mastery. There are dozens of business models, and hundreds of ways to market a business. One need to focus on one method at a time, make it work before jumping to another method.

2The Secret to My Success

Once upon a time, I was like most people – tinkle with internet marketing like a hobby, trying a little here and there. It was fun but it didn’t make me any money…until the day I fired my boss. I had enough of the misery and office politics. “I quit,” I told the tyrant boss in his face.

Faced with bills and mouths to feed..and without a job, I was desperate to survive. Failure was not an option. The time is about making money. If the things I do is not making me money, I stop doing it. I watched a 5-minute video tutorial on how one can build a website in one hour. That video changed my life. My Success was driven by Desperation. I survived.
