How to Live a Spiritual Life

By Andrew Gubb

I believe that the question of how to live a spiritual life is one that can be answered simply if a little confusingly. If I confuse you forgive me, spiritual masters are like that. To live a spiritual life, you need only be.

This may be a cliché in new age circles, but I’m going to back it up by some solid meaning now. Bear with me.

Spirituality can be defined as being the highest concept of Who You Really Are. On this planet we find ourselves as a sort of onion, with layers of “stuff” covering up the light of our soul. Being spiritual is to be the light, and to express the light through doing. To express Who You Really Are.

It doesn’t matter what your faith is or what you choose as your path. Life is the same process; taking off layers of negative “stuff” to make you more and more, Who You Really Are.

There are no guidelines to how to live a spiritual life except Be You. Perhaps the only guideline is that there are none. Don’t restrict yourself to a guide, because that is only “stuff”. Spontaneous action rather than action based on rules and ideas is more spiritual.

The meaning of life is not to learn, and suffering is not needed to learn. The meaning of life is to joyously express Who You Really Are – deeper and deeper levels of truth. If you can do that, you will be living a spiritual life – and you may appear to be living an unspiritual life, because it won’t fit into most people’s definitions of what is spiritual, but at least you will be happy, pure, and light.
