If you are considering starting a new regiment it is important to identify your goal first so that you can establish a strong mindset and conviction right from the start. Use your instinct to identify your weight loss goal and above all, be realistic. Losing weight is achievable but it should be done in a sensible and pre-determined manner for greater success. Identify your goal and record it so that you can create an action plan to follow.

Some people struggle to identify their goal initially because they are scared to consider just how much they may have to lose and the total overall weight loss may seem very daunting. Fear is a  19natural part of making changes to your life and it should be embraced. The sheer fact of acknowledging that there is a problem at all is the first step to success.

If there is a significant amount of weight to lose and you are not feeling confident that you will be able to stick to your dietary goal, then break the total weight loss into smaller and more achievable steps. Successful weight loss is all about positive thinking and being determined to change your lifestyle and achieving mastery of your eating habits. The following tips may help you to identify your weight loss goal and stick to it:

· When deciding how much weight to lose, consider not just how you will look when you reach goal weight but how you will feel. This should happen over a period of time and therefore should be gradual. Think about why you wish to lose weight and allow that reason to motivate you.

· Shop sensibly. Don’t just rely on your willpower to lose weight, eradicate those food luxuries that will hamper your progress. If you don’t buy those foods, then you cannot succumb to temptation.

· Order a photo that can show the current you and one that will highlight the person you could easily become. This can really help to boost your sense of motivation.

· Promise yourself a treat when you reach each stepping stone. This could be a day out somewhere or some new clothes for example. Make your treat really relevant though so that you see it as a reward.

· Write a list of affirmations regarding losing weight. Make sure that they really are positive statements that endorse your goals of losing weight and these will help if temptation strikes.14a

To lose weight successfully, it is important to believe in yourself. Making important changes might not be easy but they are worthwhile and if you identify your weight loss goal right at the start, you will find your journey to a fitter and healthier you, so much easier than was expected.
