Positive Thinking Techniques – “Focus on the Positive in All Things” to Change Your Life
By Robert Britt
The thing about clichés and sayings is that they often have a basis in truth. Nothing reflects this as much as the expression “Seeing the glass half full or half empty.” Are you a “half full” sort of person? If you are, chances are you have a happier life. I have a bunch of sayings printed and posted around my office and one that I think deserves some discussion is one that says:
“Focus on the positive in all things.”
Even if you have always been a ‘half empty’ person, you can change that outlook and your self esteem and your level of life satisfaction by changing your focus. Take any event or occurrence in your life and really examine it. Here’s an example:
Have you ever had an assignment and suddenly get a call a few days before the due date and found out the project had to be completed as soon as possible? Two ways of looking at this would be 1) to complain silently to yourself or out loud to others about unreasonable people and how peoples lack of planning ruins your life. Or 2) Take the new completion time frame as a challenge and then feel good about yourself for being able to step up and complete, despite the lack of time. Think about how your competency is such a gift that you can take the bull by the horns and tame it.
Either way, you need to get the assignment done. If you look at it with the positive aspects, you can take any compliments or thanks that come your way and embrace them to take your self esteem to a new level. If you don’t get a pat on the back, you can just shrug that off and move on. If you were looking at the new deadline in a negative way, that lack of a pat might be just one more thing to complain about. Let it go and move on, in any situation.
Just a few small tweaks in your perception can make a world of difference with your attitude. You know the world changes without a moments notice and that isn’t just for you. Everyone faces these challenges, whether it’s someone you work for or someone who works for you. With the huge problems that are around today, don’t you think it would be better to put things into perspective and not sweat the small things? Take the high road in all that you do and you will find that the world becomes a brighter place.
In order to make progress in your life you have to commit to making change. If you don’t make changes tomorrow is going to be very similar to yesterday, with the exception of you being a day older.
