Indeed, the Internet allows an individual to custom tailor the information they decided to digest. In other words, the Internet can become anything you want it to be, and it allows you to be yourself, at least to a point. If you feel you have to join social networks to belong, often you will find yourself mimicking the behavior of the masses to be part of it all. In many regards in that case you are giving up your individuality to join the masses.
Of course, if you seek out only like-minded people you might find yourself with a group of interesting people who seem to be a lot like you. However in doing so you cannot grow because you are funneled into a narrower and narrower box, a smaller filter allowing only certain information to percolate into your mind. In some regards this might be good for the modern-day genius, as they can turn off the noise of the social networks.
Of course, without a wide array of information to help them cross-pollination that tends to put one inside of a box, meaning that either way your mind is reformatted by the Internet, it is changing you. Is it changing you for the good or bad; hopefully not the ugly. If you try to be all things to all people, then you have to play the politically correct game, but in doing so you’ve given your mind to the Borg.
Recently, I read an interesting book, it is a business book for companies and it explains how it is important to not only gather information and data, but to use it in the right way. It explains how gathering information simply because you can provides you with too much information, information overload, and isn’t that what’s happening today with individuals on the Internet? You see, information without action isn’t worth very much. Most of the information on the social networks is not actionable, although it might be novel and worth a laugh, but you’d still have to drill down to what’s important. However if you focus too finely on various sets of information, you miss the bigger picture. What I’m saying to you is that it doesn’t matter if you are running a business or trying to run your own life – all this information is great, but only if you use it correctly – and all the while it is reformatting your brain. This is the challenge of the modern-day genius in the information age. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
