We live in confusing times. Everything is fast – too fast. We’re told that our busy lives reflect the current “Information Age.” Not quite – it’s bigger than this. The confusion we’re in is actually the prequel to a transition into a new Creative Age. Here’s what you should know.
We’re about to enter an unprecedented creative revolution. All the markers are here – it’s happening already. Look anywhere in business, ecology, lifestyle, spirituality, health, science, politics, or personal relationships: we all agree that we’re at a boiling point. And there’s no turning back! And past this boiling point, we’re entering a new era of creativity, discoveries, and surprises.
The Information Age is old news – we’ve already stepped into the Creative Age. The reason is that once everyone has a computer, there’s nothing extraordinary in manipulating information. This is why, for example, so many technical jobs are outsourced abroad. Think about this: today a typical “soccer mom” has a Facebook profile, sends out Tweets, writes a minimum of 20 emails/texts a day, and possibly shares her family pictures on a blog – and that’s pretty amazing. We’re all information experts already. So what’s next?
I offer that we’re entering a Creative Age, and I’m sharing this vision with numerous thinkers coming from the worlds of art, design, and business. For example, the author and contributing editor of Wired magazine Daniel H. Pink foresees the arising of a “Conceptual Age,” dominated by right-brain thinkers (Creatives). In his best-selling book “A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule The Future,” Pink explains, “We’ve progressed from a society of farmers to a society of factory workers to a society of knowledge workers. And now we’re progressing yet again – to a society of creators and empathizers, of pattern recognizers and meaning makers.” I wholeheartedly agree.
But there’s a catch… If you’re a Creative – don’t rejoice too fast! Your time is now, but you need to adapt and integrate your skills so they serve the community. We’re moving from a scenario where it was “us against the world,” to a shift where it’s “us in the world” – I would even say, “us as the world.”
This new Creative Age is a big test for all of us. At the individual level, living in the Creative Age means you can become an artist of your own life by bringing meaning and self-expression into everything you do. This is huge. It’s going to be a big awakening. Think about it: “bringing meaning and self-expression into everything you do” sounds nice – but it’s not for the faint of heart – it’s an adventure. It means using creativity at its purest form – with total dedication. But the good news is: the Creative Age is linked with the process of life mastery and personal growth, and we’re all invited to participate. And that means you.
In the upcoming articles, I will give you specific tools so you can cultivate your creativity in order to surf on the upcoming big wave of change.
But before I go, I’d like you to try something interesting. Ask yourself: “What kind of natural creative talent did I have as a kid?” and “Do I see it expressed in my life today?” Be honest, take a minute or two to really think about it… Write down what comes up.
Hold on tight to what you found, this is precious – this is the key that will allow you to unleash your Creative Self.
