NP: The GMO vs. Organic Debate

There is a strong criticism on whether organic foods are better than conventional and if the price is worth the upgrade in family planning concerning the food budget.  There are several reasons why GMO (genetically modified organisms) products are bad for human and domestic animals; however the FDA and USDA conveniently shy away from numerous examples that prove otherwise.

Lately, it seems that the media is purposefully flawing organic food studies to confuse the public about necessary information while pushing for GMO products.  Some news headlines are actually stating that “organic foods are no healthier than conventional foods” or “organic foods may not be healthier for you.”  Mike Adams stated in his article that disinformation outlets are mainstream media that most of the public rely on for their information on current events.  Examples include Associated Press, Reuters, Washington Post, WebMD, and NPR.  Although they carelessly lie about this, Adams has pointed out that these so called “studies” are not real studies, only reviews of other published studies with no new laboratory analysis done to back up their claims.  The review was supposedly conducted at Stanford University and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.  The study pointed out three important facts: exposures to chemical pesticides were significantly lower in organic foods; about 30% less than conventional foods. An exposure to “superbugs” in meat (i.e. antibiotic-resistant bacteria) was also significantly lower in organic foods by 33%.  Finally, the study concluded that consuming organic foods would reduce the risk of exposure to chemical pesticides and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The media it seems is ignoring quaint facts that the public needs to know.  Adams also brought up important facts: firstly, GMOs are supposedly not allowed in organic foods. Hypothetically, GMO exposures have a higher magnitude in conventional foods where GMOs are commonplace.  There is a problem with GMO alfalfa contaminating organic crops with wind and chemical runoff; for that reason, organic products must be heavily researched about their origins. Secondly, artificial sweeteners are also not allowed in organic foods.  Conventional foods are heavily sweetened with toxic chemicals (i.e. aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, saccharin, etc…).  Although most milk companies label all milk products with the false statement of “there is no significant difference between milk treated with rBGH and milk without rGBH,” there is no study of the dangerous effects of genetically-modified bovine growth hormone in conventional milk and the negative health effects on cows.  Adams also agrees that the environmental impact of conventional food production is devastating the planet.

On a positive note, natural news last month in August reported that some doctors and farmers agree that eliminating GMOs in one’s diet may prevent disease.  Jeffrey Smith has revealed that thousands of doctors are reporting the elimination of disease when patients cut genetically modified foods out of their diets. Positive results include the elimination of immune disorders, arthritis, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, skin problems, general pain, migraines, and restless leg syndrome, among other problems. According to one doctor, the results happen pretty quickly too.  Dr. Lindner stated:

 “In terms of allergies, it might take two to five days. In terms of depression, it starts to lift almost instantaneously. When I change people from a GMO diet to a GMO-free diet, I see results instantaneously in people who have foggy thinking and people who have gut symptoms like bloating, gas, irritation.”

Dr. Lindner is also recommending patients to eliminate GMO corn, soy, canola oil, and sugar with the replacement of organic products.  Her diagnosis of “full recovery” was between four to six weeks.  Farmers are also doing the switch from conventional to organic to increase the health of their livestock and themselves.  One Danish farmer eliminated GMO soy feed for his pigs and their offspring and noticed a change in their bowel issues:

 “During the following year,” death from ulcers and bloat, which had claimed 36 pigs over the previous two years, vanished. Conception rate was up, litter size was up, diseases were down, and birth defects were eliminated.”

If the U.S. incorporated this way of thinking for the livestock and their human citizens, just imagine the significant changes to the environment and all of our health.  It seems organic planning is not economically viable for pharmaceutical companies, conventional hospitals, fast food restaurants, and other waiting for one to become sick.

Doctors are also warning now of the dangers of consuming genetically modified wheat products.  Research has shown that with human consumption of GMO wheat may cause permanent liver failure and even death. This latest study was conducted by molecular biologist Jack Heinemann of the University of Canterbury in Australia.  It seems an enzyme suppressor in the GMO wheat is the culprit for this condition.  Although he foolishly recommended animal testing before human consumption, there should be other ways of studying the effect without putting animals in danger. He notably stated the complications of how this enzyme might affect other parts of the body:

The enzyme suppressor in the wheat might also attack a human enzyme that produces glycogen. Consumers who eat genetically modified wheat would end up contaminating their bodies with this enzyme-destroying wheat, causing their own livers to be unable to produce glycogen, a hormone molecule that helps the body regulate blood sugar metabolism. This, in turn, would lead to liver failure.”

It seems that these GMO genes can mimic our human genes when ingested and then “silence them” for whatever purpose they were created for.  Some scientists like biochemist Judy Carman fear that if the similarity between wheat genes and human genes can be silenced with the GMO altered gene, children would die by the age of five (due to the absence of the original working gene).  Although scientists are pushing for animal studies to find any potential dangers, perhaps eliminating them completely might do better for humanity, our genes and unnecessary animal testing.

Potential dangers of altering nature have grave consequences.  Human in the sake of progress and scientific discovery seem to forget this important detail.  Producing large quantities of GMO products brings heavy use of chemical pesticides, insecticides, and chemical runoff into streams and oceans (the very element we need to sustain our species).  Mainstream media never seems to present this reality in light of recent evidence of the imminent danger of our “conventional lifestyle.”  Organic is a luxury in terms of price, availability, and location.  Most poor families do not have enough funds to adequately feed their growing children and themselves.

Even with governments aware of this fact, they continue to feed poor people substandard conventional food loaded with chemicals and genetically-altered genes that will have grave effects in their future bodies (spiritual, mental, and physical).  On top of this atrocity, mainstream media continues to engage in disinformation that these people need in order to help not only themselves but the human impact on the planet.  Why the constant need of GMO products when the results clearly show an improvement of health in all species without it?  Do they want us sick purposefully for economic reasons or other cruel intentions?  As long as those in control refuse to help all citizens of earth (human and nonhuman) we will be forever stuck in this dangerous limbo with no positive outcome.
