I had heard the words “life coach” before. I pretty much figured it was like a watered down spiritual director. Maybe it seemed to me it was nothing short of a great American yuppie phrase. Then I did what you may be doing right now. That is, I looked into it. I wanted to learn more about it before writing the idea completely off. After all, the people I had heard speaking about life coaching were down to Earth and lived in my version of normal. What is more, there was something intriguing about it.
So, I set out to learn about life coaching. I learned a great deal of things. For example there are different ways of going about life coaching. Life coaches have different niches. To explain it a bit more let me ask you this. If you were going to be a life coach what would you major in? Think about it and quite simply, you have found your niche. Popular niches include spiritual life coaching, relationship coaching, family life coaching, coaching for high end executives. The list is pretty much as infinite as any life coach or coachee dares to imagine.
I was amazed when I discovered how much some life coaches have the guts to charge, and actually get, per client. Well over a hundred dollars for a forty minute session! Let me assure you that if you look hard enough you can find coaches that will take clients at a discounted rate.
You may be wondering what it is that life coaches actually do. Mostly, they listen and ask open ended questions with the sincere hope that the client will work out ways to help him or her solve a specific problem. Some meet with groups of people, some write about life coaching, some do work shops and seminars and webinars. Thus we come to the big question. Does the work? You know, does it really help people?
After having been life coached and taken an entire course on life coaching and speaking with other life coaches I must admit I have great confidence in the life coaching model. Not everyone does of course. Most of the people who ask me what I do, an all to common question, look at me like I have just grown ten extra heads from my left arm with purple hair, when all I had done was admit half shyly that I am a life coach.
